After playing the drums for 4 years, performing regularly at church, Hugo first picked up the bass at the age of 12, discovering a whole new understanding to the world of music. Through regular lessons, he grew a strong interest in Funk, Soul and Motown music and the bass lines that jelled each of these sounds together, including the music of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Average White Band and Victor Wooten. It was not until a few years on, that he discovered his love for Jazz, listening to George Benson, Chet Baker, Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Absorbing and playing such a broad style of music is what took Hugo into a greater understanding of the values behind performing and improvising, as well as the possibilities that lie behind the creation of new styles of music that spring from the Jazz tradition, coming across names such as Christian Scott, Keith Jarrett and Janek Gwizdala. Hugo now explores his own musical voice as he studies Jazz Bass with a scholarship at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in Greenwich, London, taking on the influence he gains from groups like Dirty Loops, to artists such as Kendrick Lamar. He performs frequently in the London area at jam sessions, function gigs, both as a freelance musician, and through institutes such as the National Youth Jazz Collective.
