Waynne Woo Seok Kwon was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1995. His musical roots trace back to his family of musicians; his mother is a cello teacher, with whom he began his cello studies at the age of three, while his aunts are singers and composers. Waynne’s first cello was a gift from his grandmother. At age five, Waynne began studies with Jane Williams, who he met through the Junior Program at the Sydney Conservatorium. In the same year, he gave his solo recital debut. He proceeded to achieve his AMus A (Pass with Distinction) at the age of 12, under Jane’s guidance. In the following year, he was awarded his LMus A , under the tuition of Patricia McMeekin. Waynne also studied with Susan Blake and has also been taking lessons with the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s principal cellist Timo-Veikko Valve. He also studied under Umberto Clerici at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before recently moving to Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music. Waynne was also a pianist, having learnt repertoire from the Licentiate syllabus under Ransford Elsley. Waynne held the Denise Prior music scholarship during his time at Sydney Grammar St Ives Prep School in 2006-7. He graduated from Sydney Gramar School in 2013 where he held a full music scholarship from 2008-2013. In 2012, Waynne won Grammar’s Concerto Competition, performing the 1st Movement of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto. This gave him the opportunity to perform the first movement of Shostakovich’s Cello Concert No.1 with the School Orchestra. Further, he has given many recitals at school and at places such as the Kirribilli House , participated in several masterclasses and has assisted other Grammar boys with the HSC Music syllabus. During his performing career so far, Waynne has won numerous awards and competitions. This includes 2nd place in the 16/U Viola or Cello and 25/U Viola or Cello and 1st place in the 18/U Acoustic String Instrument Solo category of the Sydney Eisteddfod. Waynne placed 1st as a Grand Prix recipient of the 2011 Classical Music Contest for Korean Youths in Australia and was announced as the “Rising Star” within Korean Youths of Australia, culminating with a performance in the Verbrugghen Hall for the AKCA Concert. He was also chosen as a Recitalist at the National Youth Concerto Competition 2012 held in Brisbane. Waynne was also successful in auditioning to play with the Sookmyung Women’s University’s Symphony Orchestra in 2012, as well as being awarded a scholarship for the AYO National Music Camp 2013, held in Adelaide. He was also one of four Finalists in the KPO Concerto Competition 2013 where he performed the 3rd and 4th movements of the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1. He was awarded a scholarship for the AKCA 2013 Masterclass with Teije Hylkema and was invited to play the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia with Madeleine Easton in October 2013 at the Verbrugghen Hall in the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Waynne was fortunate enough to be awarded the BBM Travel Scholarship, allowing him to travel to the UK to audition for numerous institutions and partake in private lessons with leading cello teachers. Consequently, he was asked to perform at Parliament House of Sydney in November. He was also recently nominated to perform in the Sydney Opera House for the 2014 HSC Encore Concert having been awarded full marks in his Music Extension HSC exam. Waynne’s continuing passion and love for music has ultimately led him to pursue a career in music and further his studies in cello at a tertiary level. He aspires to be an all-rounded complete musician. In December he took lessons in Europe with Lazlo Fenyo in Frankfurt, Peter Bruns in Leipzig , Jo Cole, Mats Lidstrom, Natalie Clein and Josephine Knight in London and Heinrich Schiff in Vienna. Waynne was successful in his recent auditions at the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music and Royal Northern College of Music where he received scholarships to all three institutes.
