Sophie’s musical career began at an early age, receiving trumpet lessons from her father from the age of 4 and beginning to sing with the RSNO Junior Chorus under Christopher Bell aged 7. Sophie sang under Christopher Bell with the RSNO Junior Chorus from 2004-2014, during which time she has had the opportunity to perform at events such as the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and in venues including the Amsterdam Conzertgebouw Hall and the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms and regularly in the Edinburgh Usher Hall as part of the Edinburgh International Festival, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Caird Hall. With the RSNO she has performed under the batons of such as Neeme Järvi, Donald Runnicles, Thomas Sondergard, Peter Oundijan and Stephane Deneve. Sophie has sung with the National Youth Choir of Scotland, again with Christopher Bell, in their National Girls Choir, the National Youth Choir itself and its Chamber Choir. As part of NYCoS Sophie had recorded CDs, performed Mozart’s Requiem in the BBC Proms under Donald Runnicles, and in 2015 she was invited as part of a smaller choir to join the Orchestra Revolutionnaire et Romantique with John Eliot Gardiner to perform Berlioz’ ‘Lelio’ in both the Edinburgh International Festival and the Berlioz Festival in La Cote-Saint-Andre. As a soloist Sophie began studying singing with Wilma MacDougall aged 12 at the High School of Glasgow. During her school career she has performed as a soloist for the RSNO Junior Chorus, in the Susan Boyle Musical, 'I Dreamed a Dream', the Bearsden Choir, Strathaven Choral Society, the Kelvin Rotary Club and the HSOG Chamber Choir, performing on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 1 on Songs of Praise (on which the Chamber Choir won Senior School Choir of the Year 2013), also winning prizes in the Glasgow Music Festival. She was also asked to perform as a soloist with NYCoS in their 2016 Chicago Tour. Since moving to Manchester in 2014 to study Music at the University of Manchester, Sophie has been studying individually with Debbie Rees of the Royal Northern College of Music. She has performed as a soloist with The Cosmo Singers and with the University Chorus, alongside playing the trumpet in various ensembles and regularly sings new music by student composers. More recently Sophie has performed as the soloist for the Derbyshire City & County Wind Band with Mark Heron and regularly sings new music by student composers performing in new music festivals, such as the Manchester SICK! festival, Vaganza and the New Music Northwest Festival. She has played Mercedes (Carmen) and Helena (A Midsummer Night's Dream) in university opera scenes and Dame Elizabeth Murgatroyd in the Manchester Universities’ Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s 2016 production of ‘Ruddygore’ and has taken part in masterclasses with figures including Susan Bullock and Malcolm Martineau.
