About National Youth Recorder Orchestra

Classical ensemble
Cambridge

I am a synaesthetic blind composer. The themes of my compositions are generally nature, philosophy and psychology. I enjoy exploring the setting of texts from a wide range of cultures and languages, including Mandarin and Basque and I hope to add ancient texts from languages such as Sanskrit and Pali to my list. Outside of choral music, I love to write for unusual combinations of instruments, using my synaesthesia as a source of inspiration. I am also fascinated by the use of music as a form of deep self-expression. I like to remember what Sibelius said, "Music begins where the possibilities of language end". My goal is to study Music at Cambridge and to become a professional composer.

This piece stands out as the most earnest attempt in the competition at something original. I am impressed by the variety of the 'disconnected and irrelevant' ideas, some of which have a very clear, almost naive harmonic innocence, whilst others are complex and pit extreme dissonances against one another.
