Born in 1996, Laurens grew up in Oxford. He studied with Janet Tinbergen and later with GIllian Thoday, before moving to London to attend the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he currently studies with Louise Hopkins.
Laurens regularly plays with orchestras and ensembles at the Guildhall School, which has included leading the cello section in a production of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Iolantha’. He is also a regular member of the Melos Sinfonia. Before attending the Guildhall Laurens was the principal cellist of the London Schools Symphony Orchestra for three years.
Recent engagements include his concerto debut with the Tempest Symphony Orchestra playing the Dmitri Kabalevsky Cello Concerto No. 2, and recitals across the UK with the Turner Piano Quartet and the Caversham Trio, including educational residencies at schools in Bristol and London.
In addition to solo and chamber playing, Laurens is a founding member of the Kamo Quartet, an experimental string ensemble focussed on live free improvisation. They have performed across the UK and have led workshop sessions in association with University College London.
