About Kevin

Born in Beijing, China, Kevin Zhu is an accomplished pianist who has been described as "outstanding", "prolific" and "talented". He moved to the UK at a young age and started to play the piano at 6 years old and has since given many performances both as a pianist and guitarist, in and out of school. He has obtained the DipABRSM degree and has since tutored students in music theory and performance. He is currently working on a qualification in Music Direction and Orchestral conducting. He is a young talented musician from a middle-class Chinese non-musician family and regards Lang Lang as one of his mentors. In a private interview at his former school, he stated that his maternal grandfather was a big influence to his gateway in music, he said: "At the time my maternal grandparents and mother was born, the times were rough under the Chinese revolution. Most families could not afford music tuition, and he [maternal grandfather] adored music and listened orchestral and piano solo music using a cassette recorder [now he has modern CD recorder]. It was at a very young age as an only child that I say on the couch next to my grandfather did I realize how powerful and colourful music is. This was my first step to becoming a professional musician." He was tutored by Rosie Cross, a private tutor based in Birmingham, and has extensive experience in Western Classical music and Eastern/Chinese Classical music. He is well known for his interpretations of well known works of Chinese Classical music in the Chinese culture which includes Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon; Autumn Moon on a Calm River; Spring Dance; LiuYang River; Jasmine Flower (Mo Li Hua); The Mermaid Suite, and many others. As well as Kevin's pianistic experience, he has experience in chamber and choral music, having participated in the local choir for 4 years. Kevin is now based in Birmingham, UK, though he regularly goes to Manchester. Kevin also has a previous degree in chemistry, and follows the footpath of Carlo Kleiber and Alexander Borodin.
