London/Manchester

CJ Carrington is a classical pianist from Mitcham, South London. His musical education is comprised of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (JGSMD) and the University of Manchester (BMus and MMus degrees). He also holds a Dip.LCM in Piano Performance (95%). He studied for a Bachelor's in Music at the University of Manchester, graduating in 2018 with a first-class honours degree. His pianistic talent was initially developed under Adrian Telfer, and later via tutelage and expertise of concert pianists Stephen Coombs, and his current teacher, Andrew Wilde. In 2018, he gave his concerto debut after his success in the competitive auditions held by the Manchester University Music Society. The enabled his performance of Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto to take place at the Cosmo Rodewald Hall, which received a positive critical review. CJ currently studies for a Master’s in Musicology at the University of Manchester. Balanced by his performances of challenging works in the piano repertory, including Beethoven, Liszt, and Chopin, he also has a keen interest in keyboard music more broadly. His research dissertation at bachelor’s level focussed on the music of early modern England (c.1600), which has generated a particular fascination for the composers John Bull, William Byrd, and Orlando Gibbons. This has led to his desire to programme more of these challenging and rich works with those more well known, which results in highly dynamic recitals. His most recent recital engagements have included performances of the Liszt Sonata in B minor in Altrincham, Cheshire, under the aegis of the North West Music Trust. He was also invited to perform in the Lunchtime Concert Series at Merton College, Oxford, Wimbledon Seventh Day Adventist Church, Wimbledon, and St Chad’s Parish Church, Rochdale. CJ continues to forge and develop various relationships with colleagues, and is often relied upon to act as an accompanist and pianist in wider ensemble work. He is beginning to emerge as a musician balanced by an impressive technical arsenal for the keyboard and a well-rounded intellectual awareness of music.
